{New York, NY}: We Need Your Advice!

On Monday my Mom and I are off to the Big Apple in an extended celebration of her 50th Birthday!

{via}

This is going to be a first time visit for both of us, so for all of you New York bloggers and for those of you that have visited the city, we need your help with suggestions on things to see, eat, and explore.  I'm mostly in it for the food and shopping {so far I've heard Shake Shack is a must!} and my Mom is more interested in the sights.  I know that so far she's reserved tickets for Jimmy Fallon and Ground Zero, but aside from that we have an open plate.

What else do we absolutely need to do with our 3 days in the Big Apple to make our trip to New York complete!?  All suggestions are much appreciated :)

{We're staying in the Central Park Area - FYI}

Hope everyone has a wonderful Friday and relaxing weekend ahead!

Thank you in advance for tips and suggestions!

  1. It's been a while since I was last in NY:(

    There are some good Korean BBQs in midtown Manhattan near Times Square. Do not eat in Times Square.

    Chinatown is fun for seeing cheap fakes on Canal St, and Joe's Shanghai is the place for Soup Dumplings which I adore and definitely do not eat enough in my life.

    Magnolia cupcakes was made famous by Sex and the City and their cupcakes are delish (I made some from their recipe recently and they are mighty fine).

    Off the beaten track: There's a radioactive statue in Washington Heights if you're into that kind of thing. The Cyclone Rollercoaster in Coney Island is fun although Coney Island is a shadow of what it used to be and it takes a while to get there.

    You can see the Statue of Liberty for free by riding on the Staten Island Ferry.

  2. So exciting! I visit NY often; I created a little website of sorts for when people ask me these questions (vatony.blogspot.com) Maybe something in there will be helpful for you! My NY posts are at http://tinyurl.com/bmae77z. Maybe you will see something that will interest you!

    My main suggestions are to do different neighborhoods each day, never eat in Times Square, and visit the Top of the Rock instead of the Empire State Building (much better views at TotR!) Also, the Met Museum prices are "suggested" prices; you can totally go and give the ticket ladies $1 and get in.

    Fav places I repeatedly visit to eat: Shake Shack, Vapiano, Pommes Frites, S'Mac, Haru, the Creperie, and John's Pizzaria! Oh, and don't miss out on a Pinkberry stop!

  4. i love telling people tips for new york! i actually asked for help on my blog a few months ago and i really got some amazing responses!
    for starters, you have to do the high line and eataly.
    as well as rice to riches (best rice pudding in america) and la churreria. we spent one day walking across the brooklyn bridge and then stopping for lunch at grimaldi's for pizza in brooklyn, followed by ice cream at the brooklyn ice cream factory which is on the hudson river. gorgeous views! theres also a little restaurant/bar called PDT that is inside of a phone booth inside of a hot dog restaurant. google it. thats all i can think of for now, hope yall have SO much fun!

  5. Seriously, after living there for 4 years, the best tip I can give you is to put down the map and just get lost!!! You will find hidden treasures on every corner. But, definitely take a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge. There is NO better view!

  6. I HIGHLY recommend Maui Wowie Burger at Bare Burger. I had mine with beef - though they have plenty of free-range/grass fed meat and poultry for you to choose from including wild boar, ostrich, lamb, elk and chicken. Milkshakes are awesome. Also worth trying while at Bare Burger is Crabbie's Ginger Beet. They have locations all over the City: http://www.bareburger.com/

    Places to Go: Brooklyn Museum and Brooklyn Botanic Gardens are right next door to each other. http://www.brooklynmuseum.org/

    Enjoy!

  9. I live an hour from NYC on Long Island and go in at least once a month. My favorite place to be is Greenwich Village (which is downtown). Walk on Bleecker Street from one end to the other: you'll see endless cool stores and restaurants. Also, if you want a really cool treat, take a helicopter ride around the city. I did it two weeks ago and wrote about the experience on my blog.

  10. Eeeeeeek Jen, I am so excited for you and also so jealous too!! I have only been on holiday to NYC but these were my favourites:
    Shake Shack
    Brooklyn Diner
    Cocktails @ The Mandarin Hotel
    Cycle through Central Park
    Show on Broadway (we saw Jersey Boys & Mary Poppins)
    Rockefella Centre
    Statue of Liberty
    Greenwich Village
    And shop up a storm EVERYWHERE you go!!

    Enjoy special girl x

  16. Le Relais de Venise L'Entrecote in midtown is a must. The only item on the menu is steak-frites, but it is the best steak and fries you will ever have. The one in Paris is amazing, and I'm sure that the one in NYC will not disappoint. Have a wonderful trip!
