a new friend.

One night while Jurgen's parents were visiting last week, I came home from work to find this furry guy {or gal rather} poking around the inside of my kitchen.  Jurg's Dad said he had made friends with her outside and decided to give her a little break from this cold freezing Jo'burg weather we're having.  She immediately came running up to me, purring and begging for some attention.

I was immediately smitten, and I think it's safe to say that she was too :)

Since that evening last week she's been around non-stop, we even allowed her inside on Saturday and she curled up in a ball on my lap while we watched movies.  On Sunday, we worked outside on the patio and there she was again, nestled in a ball on my legs as I typed away.  She's been spending the night on the porch curled up on her {newly} favorite patio chair and every morning I find her waiting at the sliding glass door when I pull back the curtain.  A few days ago, I gave her a little bit of cream on a saucer and she absolutely devoured it so I've been feeling sorry for her and leaving a little each morning before work.  I've also donated one of my old blankets to her so that she has something warm to sleep on every night.  I think it's safe to say that she already has me hooked, and she's not even mine!

We've even named her.  Last week, Jurgen started calling her "Spook" {pronounced Spoo-uk}, which means "ghost" in Afrikaans and the name has since stuck.

It almost feels like we've adopted a new pet :)

The funny thing is, I'm not sure who her owner is or if she even has an owner at all.  She's super friendly and seems well taken care of, but it doesn't seem like she's ever allowed in at night and she's always out and about.  Either way I'm happy to have her company for now and hope she continues to pop by {at least every once in awhile}.  I've been going through serious pet withdrawals since I moved to South Africa in 2008 {I had to leave my sweet yellow labrador behind!} and it feels so nice to have an animal around again, even if I'm normally more of a dog person.

oh yea... and the most interesting thing about Spook?...

we think she's pregnant.

Pretty soon it's very possible that there will be a whole litter of baby kittens following her around.  And then, I'm not really sure how I will resist kidnapping adopting them all.

Maybe I can choose just one? ;)

  1. Aww she looks so nice!

I'd have a hard time turning her away too --- and when there's kittens involved. You may just become the neighbourhood cat lady Jenna!

  3. She's absolutely gorgeous! Could you take her to the vets and see if she is chipped?
Before my grans neighbours moved house they had a cat who practically lived at my grans! He'd come round for breakfast and dinner everyday and he had a favourite chair in her house which was eventually named 'Tiddle's Chair'. Cats definitely rule the roost and get what they want when they want!
Ooo keep us updated please on whether she is pregnant!xxx

  6. Wow, usually white cats are always the tiniest bit dirty-looking. But she's spotless! So pretty. You need to get one of her kittens, for sure ... and have a blog poll to name it. :)

I always wonder about cats like Spook... where do they really live? And do their owners know that they have this whole other life with other people?
Love the name Spook, it fits her :)

  14. Awww how sweet! We almost kidnapped the cat that lives next door to us since he was always sneaking into our kitchen window. Life is not complete without a little furry friend around. I hope you get to keep a kitten. :)
