A {Spontaneous} Trip to Yzerfontein

This year I decided to fly back from California just before Christmas so that I could be together with Jurg over the holidays.  Earlier in the month we had looked into making a trip down to Cape Town {where his parents live}, but after taking one glance at plane tickets we decided that it just wouldn't be a viable option.  For the first time ever we were planning to spend Christmas just the two of us and I bought a little tree and stockings in an effort make the flat a bit more festive and introduce Jurgen to some of my American traditions {he never grew up with stockings - gasp!}.

I arrived back in Johannesburg prepared for a very quiet couple of weeks, and ready to spend hours in blogging bliss and look into some day trips in and around the city to keep ourselves occupied.  The night I landed we went out to dinner and between sentences Jurgen casually mentioned in passing, "So, we're going to Cape Town for Christmas."  Huh?

After I digested the fact that I'd have to unpack, re-pack, and get back onto a plane within two days of getting off the flight of death, I was super excited about the impromptu adventure.  The next day {Christmas Eve} we booked tickets for the next morning {Christmas} and then that evening we took turns reading the Christmas story out of the bible {Jurgen in Afrikaans and me in English} and had our own little stocking and gift exchange.  It was the perfect way to celebrate Christ's birth.

The next morning we were off, and a few hours later Jurgen's parents had picked us up form the airport and we were on our way to the quaint little fishing town of Yzerfontein where his parents have the most perfect little beach house.  We spent the bulk of the week sleeping in, eating seafood, jogging along our favorite route, exploring the beach, and living the all around good life.  With the exception of a couple day trips into Cape Town {which I'll post about later}, we didn't really do much of anything, and that felt great.

View from the backyard.  If you look closely you can see Table Mountain in the distance.

"Frikkie"

Nothing beats the west coast during the summer time. So good!

  1. Looks awesome! I just love "Frikkie". I have the opposite problem, my American husband never grew up with a stocking, but we ALWAYS had them growing up.
I can't believe we were in the Cape at the same time and never met up. :(
